java version "1.3.1_01"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1_01)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.3.1_01, mixed mode)
As a software vendor, we wish to distribute the Java Runtime Environment with
our product. We want our software to use a single install program, which will
install our software plus the java runtime environment (if required).
Currently this is quite awkward - it involves us manually adding the JRE files
and registry settings into our own installation program, along with logic to
detect what version is currently installed, and to install the java plugin.
Microsoft have developed a standard way for this sort of thing to be done
easily, as part of their "Microsoft Installer" technology. See:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/msi/merg_9x9v.asp
It would be very helpful for the JRE's win32 installer to be updated to use
Microsoft Installer technology, and for a "merge module" to be provided for the
JRE (at least for future releases of the JRE).
