      Hi:

      Your help with the following issue would be very much appreciated:

      One of our customers -- Compaq (a J2SE source licensee) -- urgently
      needs a fix for the problem described below, since it is severely
      affecting one of their strategic customers. In brief, the latter
      customer is receiving a Seg Fault due to an assertion failure.
      They were able to reproduce it with java_g, so the actual assertion
      could be found:

      JDK: 1.2.2_009 (Reference Implementation)
      module: "src/share/javavm/runtime/classinitialize.c"
      routine: "ResolveClassConstant0"
      near the top to the routine it fails on the following assertion:
      sysAssert((mask & (1 << type)) != 0);

      mask = 10000000000 (or CONSTANT_Methodref)
       
      It looks in the constant pool to find the type. This is not matching
      with CONSTANT_Methodref. This looks like one of those assertions
      that should never fail. In fact, it does go through this code extremely
      often so the code itself does work. Why would this assertion ever fail?
      Could it be that something along the way was corrupted and it ended up
      getting the wrong type out of the constant pool?

      Alexander Garthwaite, with whom we had earlier communications on this
      subject, provided the following feedback:

      The test is a bit odd. Here's the code from
      ResolveClassConstant0():

      if ((mask & (1 << type)) == 0) {
      sysAssert((mask & (1 << type)) != 0);
      return FALSE;
      }

      Note that it is an assert that is guaranteed to fail (given the
      test in the enclosing conditional). What is going on is the
      following: "mask" is the expected type expressed as a bitmap and
      "type" is the actual type retrieved from the constant pool type
      table. If these do not agree, then we've made the wrong call.
      It would be interesting to see a stack trace as well as to see
      the value of "type".

      Do you know what version of 1.2.2 your customer is running?
      There was at least one fix (involving the resolution of constant
      strings) that made it into 1.2.2_11 so you may want to contact
      CTE and try that.

      If at all possible, I'd like to make the fix available to aforementioned
      licensee a.s.a.p., i.e., without waiting until the scheduled release of
      1.2.2_011 on January 30, 2002.

      IMPORTANT: They requested the patch to fix just *this problem only*,
      rather than the alternative of receiving the entire 1.2.2_011 source
      bundle from us, and then having to figure out for themselves what
      changes fix the problem; this seems understandable (although perhaps
      not practically feasible?), as they already made a large amount of
      changes to the original source code while porting it to their platform.

      The stack trace related to the problem is included below. As for the
      value of "type", unfortunately I was unable to obtain it, as the problem
      is occuring at the site of this licensee's customer (rather than at the
      licensee site), and so the licensee was unable to debug it and gather
      more info. But they do have all the other values leading up to it.
