      FULL PRODUCT VERSION :
      installation file: jre-6u22-windows-x64.exe
      version 6.0.220.4

      ADDITIONAL OS VERSION INFORMATION :
      Windows 7 Ultimate Version 6.1 build 7600

      EXTRA RELEVANT SYSTEM CONFIGURATION :
Mozilla firefox installed in a non-default directory location.

A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
I have installed Mozilla Firefox in a custom defined directory location
(eg: C:\Installed_Apps rather than the usual C:\Program Files).
It is set as default browser and functions correctly.

When I run the JRE installer it completes sucessfully, and it appears that JRE is correctly installed.

However the Java plug-in is not visible in Firefox (not listed under "add-ons").

I re-installed Java, after making sure that Firefox was fully set-up for each user, but this had no effect.

When I open the Java Control Panel the Advanced Setting "Default Java for Browsers" show
      - a greyed-out check box with Java enabled by default for Internet Explorer
      and
      - a non-greyed-out check box for Java for Mozilla which is not enabled
If I select the check-box to enable Java for Mozilla this is accepted by the Interface and I can hit "Apply" or "OK".
But whenever I re-open the Control Panel the selection has been re-set and Java for Mozilla is de-selected again.
And it never appears in the Firefox browser list, and does not function when required for a web-page.

It appears that the Installer/Control Panel expect Firefox to be located in the default directory, and are incapable of enabling Java for Firefox if it is located anywhere else.

Note that I had a similar problem several years ago with WIndows XP, and I think at the time my only work around was to re-install Firefox in the default location.

I assume that the same work around will be required now.

However it should be relatively simple to make Java work with Firefox regardless of the Firefox installation directory (and the Java installer should not be making assumptions about the location of the other installed software).

For example I can select to Install Java in a different location (this works).
Similarly it should just simply have an option for me to select the location where I have installed Firefox.

      Regards

STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
Install Mozilla Firefox in any current version of WIndows using a non-standard folder location (eg. C:\My Installation\Mozilla).

Install Java JRE for WIndows (in a non-standard location - though I don't think that this is relevant).

      EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
      EXPECTED -
Java plug in should be installed and enabled for both installed browsers (IE8 and Firefox).
      ACTUAL -
It is impossible to enable the Java plug-in for Firefox, whereas the Java plug-in for IE8 is automatically installed.

      REPRODUCIBILITY :
This bug can be reproduced always.

      CUSTOMER SUBMITTED WORKAROUND :
Re-Install Firefox in the default location (I have not yet tested this with WIndows 7 but it worked with XP previously).
