Regression: JDK1.1.6K classloading sometimes fails with "NoClassDefFoundError"

The most commonly reported class is "java.util.Date," though others may fail as well. This is a random bug, appearing only on attempts to load multi-threaded applications, and affected by a wide variety of circumstances. We have not yet managed to produce a simple test case.

The only classes that have ever failed to load are coming from .zip or .jar files on the classpath. This could be an indication that the zip support is not being accessed in a thread-safe manner, or it could simply be a statistical thing since that's where the majority of our classes reside.
