Description
Name: gm110360 Date: 11/15/2001
java version "1.3.1_01"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1_01a)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.3.1_01, mixed mode)
When using the plugin to run applets loaded from a server that requires
authentication, the user is prompted to login every time a request is made to
the server. So, if the classes are loaded individually, the user must re-enter
a user name and password for every class.
I have an applet that requires a lot of communication with the server during
its lifetime. Every time it sends a request to the server, another
authentication is required. It makes my applet unusable.
This is a regression bug from 1.3.0 and I'm nearly positive that it was
introduced with the fix of 4394694. In that bug, the user only got one chance
to login correctly. If the wrong user name and password were entered, the
browser and plugin had to be restarted before another prompt was even
displayed. In the evaluation, it said that the fix was to remove the cache.
Obviously removing the cache is a bad idea because it causes the problem that
I'm describing here.
This problem exists in every version of 1.3.1 and 1.4betaX that I've tested.
If it isn't fixed, the plugin will be unusable for applets from servers
requiring authentication. This is not a rare situation. Please do not release
1.3.1_01a or 1.4 without fixing this problem.
