      Description

        Ephox is running http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/examples/components/index.html#TextSamplerDemo

On Windows Vista, using Firefox 3 with JRE 1.5_17, load an applet into a page, then rapidly click between the applet and the webpage itself. In their environment this will cause Firefox to freeze, requiring the browser to be shut down. This issue does not happen with JRE 1.6.

Cu can’t replicate the problem IE7 on Vista or IE7 on a Windows XP machine.

Cu can also replicate the problem on a Windows XP machine, although it’s far more difficult to trigger the problem. Cu needs to repeatedly click between the sections faster and for far longer until it trigger whatever condition is causing the problem.

Have requested the cu to run adplus -hang to get the dmp file which is available at /net/cores.central/cores/dir33/70768846/Hang_Mode__Date_03-19-2009__Time_10-54-28AM

The testing program can be found at /net/cores.central/cores/70768846

The customer has provided the following information

        1. The exact steps (step by step) to reproduce the problem including a sample test case

        Open testPage.html (packaged in example.zip at /net/cores.central/cores/70768846
l). Click in the bottom right text area in the applet. Click outside of the applet into the webpage itself. Repeat this process as rapidly as possible. Within several seconds, you should see Firefox freeze.

Note that it’s possible to replicate this problem by clicking between the applet and the webpage at a reasonable speed (instead of a very, very fast speed). It’s just more difficult to trigger the problem the slower you click.

        2. The exact version of java : java -version (1.5_17) -->> not working

Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_17-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_17-b04, mixed mode, sharing)

        3. The exact version of java : java -version (1.6) -->> working
        Java version "1.6.0_12"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_12-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.2-b01, mixed mode, sharing)

        4. The exact version of Windows Vista including Service Pack
        Windows Vista Business
        Service Pack 1
        Processor: Intel Core2 CPU, 6400 @ 2.13GHz 2.13GHz
        Memory: 4.00 GB
        System type: 64-bit Operating System

a> Does this happen with other browsers like Opera, Netscape, Safari, IE, Mozilla?
I can’t replicate the problem IE7 on Vista or IE7 on a Windows XP machine.

b> Does this happen with other OS like Solaris, Linux, HP-UX?
I can also replicate the problem on a Windows XP machine, although it’s far more difficult to trigger the problem. I need to repeatedly click between the sections faster and for far longer until I trigger whatever condition is causing the problem.

Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 2
        Processor: Intel Core2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13Ghz 2.09Ghz
        Memory: 508 MB

c> Did you use the same OS (Windows Vista), browser (Firefox 3) & applet for JRE 1.6?
I did. Firefox 3 on Vista, using JRE 1.6 update 12 does not exhibit the problem.

e> What was the earlier version of JRE: 1.5.0_xx that works fine with-out freeze?

JRE 1.5.0_16 freezes, although JRE 1.5.0_13 works just fine.

Interestingly enough I can’t trigger the problem in JRE 1.4.2_19.

f> Did you try using JRE: 1.5.0 Update 17 Revision b11?
I downloaded JRE 1.5.0 update 17 b11 for Windows 64bit machines and couldn’t get Firefox to use this particular JRE. However, I also downloaded the non-64bit version of JRE 1.5.0 update 17 b11 and using this JRE I’m still able to replicate the problem.

Since there was some focus fixed on 1.5.0_15, I have asked the customer to test it on 1.5.0_14 and 1.5.0_15. Still, they are still seeing Firefox hang with JRE 1.5.0_14 and JRE 1.5.0_15.

They are able to replicate the issue on several other machines in their office.

        Thanks,

        Herrick
