Using access keys, ALT+"Access Key", to activate a check box just moves focus to it. It should also activate (so select or deselect) the check box as it does for native Windows check boxes.

For an example of a native behavior, bring up the Properties dialog from Windows Explorer for a file and using Alt+R to toggle the Read-Only check box.
