I am getting OutOfMemory exceptions from the compiler,
even though I ahve a huge space which is hardly being used.

How about either an explicit option to set the compiler memory size
or a hidden way of passing parameters to the copy of "java" used
to run the compiler.

I am getting the exception on /usr/local/java/nightly/jdk1.1, 18Jul96
