Example: on screen 2 of Initial Selections, type something into the root password field. Then select characters by dragging mouse with btn1 down. Characters are in reverse video. Now try typing a new password string (without hitting backspace first). System beeps but doesn't replace text.

Type-over text selections is the standard in all respectable GUI toolkits.
