Use the test application test/java/awt/im/IMFTest.java, which now draws a caret. Switch to a IIIMP input method, and use it to type some Japanese text. Note that often there's no caret at all, at other times the caret shows up in the wrong location. Having no caret may be OK if a "selected" highlight is used, but a caret separating hiragana from romaji can hardly be intentional.
