      Patrick's original synopsis: "ListDataListener.contentsChanged()"

      * Sent when the contents of the list has changed in a way
           * that's too complex to characterize with the previous
           * methods. Index0 and index1 bracket the change.

      this javadoc doesn't really say that this is called if
      an item has been replaced.

      also, might i suggest you tighten the spec so that
      this is called only in response to items being replaced?
      it's too complicated to deal with if this additions
      and deletions might also appear in this call.
