Please see bug 4180453 r.e. SimpleDateFormat's parse behavior when using format "yyyy" with a year string containing less than four digits.

The response to that bug states, "The API is behaving as specified". The response then goes on to explain that "yyyy" does not represent the minimum number of digits, but that the year will be parsed as a literal number.

There is no mention of this behavior in the documentation for SimpleDateFormat.
