Under Netscape 4.x (4.5 and 4.61 confirmed), Java Plugin 1.3beta
and 1.2.2 takes a LONG time to start loading an applet: it
takes ~2 minutes between the time the Plugin displays its console
and the time it actually begins loading the applet (when the
browser window shows the grey box with "Loading Applet".)
Under IE, the same interval is seconds.
The problem is not due to network traffic (how could it be, given that the
delay is during the time when the Plugin hasn't even loaded my
applet yet? I also checked my server access log - no activity
during the time of this delay.)
Well, therein lies the problem: after you go to the URL, the Plugin
console starts up....then you wait 2 minutes...THEN Netscape's window
changes to show the rectangular region reserved for the applet with
the message "Loading Java Applet" (and THEN, depending on your network
bandwidth, it takes 5-50 seconds to download our 186K Applet.)
Under I.E. that period is a few seconds.
The weird thing is, as I mentioned, that you can remove the 2 minute
delay by simply pressing the STOP button under Netscape after the Plugin
console comes up. It's as if Netscape hasn't finished loading the page
yet and the Plugin was prevented from accessing the region until Netscape
was finished doing that!
