To be able to display Java GUI-based applications on a variety of remote
monitors, we need support for remote displays with non-native byte-order such
as 16-bit, 24-bit or 15-bit.

Currently, in Java2, when trying to display on such remote monitors, you either
get a "not supported" error message or it just doesn't work. This support
should also include performance parity with JDK 1.1 for the display of images
on remote monitors.
