They need this to be supported in a first-class way so that (for example) a
Swing component can be on top of and partially obscuring an AWT component.

Their preferred solution was that we should implement a lightweight version of
the AWT components using Swing. In fact they have a bunch of source code for
this that they might be willing to offer
