Solaris 8. Login to the "chinese" locale. Check for LANG=chinese in the environment.
Start up the test FontTest.ksh, attached. The xterm will display something like

% FontTest.ksh
Locale: zh/xxxx
Variant:
Country:
User.language: zh
User.region: null

User.region should not be null.

This has been checked using JDK 1.3 (production) build 04 and JDK 1.3 (classic)
build T.
