Despite the fact that the most common signing method for Java 1.1 applets is Netscape's signtool, it is possible and practical to sign a Java 1.1 applet. There is no way to sign a Java2 applet without requiring the customer to engage in tedious support tasks. This means that projects which have ported to Java2 making the reasonable assumption of -no regression- find themselves face to face with the very real problem that there is a Java2 plugin for Netscape but it does not support any practical kind of signed applet.

This bug is to address the fact that Java2 applets cannot be signed, the
fact that Java3 can be does not help us. As long as Java2 is supported,
then we would expect to be able to get this issue addressed (perhaps via a
      patch??).

We need a resolution with Java2. Our product is build using 1.2 &
we need to get a fix so that we can release our product with 1.2.
If you know of any workarounds that we can implement, we can lower
the priority of this bug. Otherwise, our product cannot release.

Any info you can pass on would be greatly appreciated.

Please give me a call if you want to discuss this issue.

      thanks much,

      Kathy
