Currently in the win32 build if you attempt to ovrride the default
settings using ALT_BOOTDIR, ALT_OUTPUTDIR, ALT_COMPILER_PATH,
ALT_UNIXCOMMAND_PATH, ALT_MSDEVTOOLS_PATH or ALT_DEVTOOLS_PATH, you must
use Unix style path names (/ instead of \).

This is a pain. The build should accept either and convert as needed.
