The 'Check For Update' dialog hangs if the system is offline. The
check seems to happen on the event dispatcher thread, so the Application
Manager, Check For Update Dialog is not repainint, and it is not possible
to select close.

The URL request must happen on another thread so the operation can always
be aborted.
