Japanese characters does not display on java gui programs
with merlin build 1.4.0-beta-b48 on Sparc/x86 Solaris8 UTF-8.

SUNWi4of SUNWi9of is installed to tested Boxes for X11 ISO-8859-4 optional fonts
and X11 ISO-8859-9 optional fonts.
If not installed with UTF on Solaris8, the code displays below.
Font specified in font.properties not found [-monotype-arial-bold-r-normal-bo*-%d-*-*-p-*-iso8859-9]
Font specified in font.properties not found [-b&h-LucidaBrightLat4-Normal-r-nal--*-%d-*-*-p-*-iso8859-4]


Reproduce to:
1, Login to Solaris8 ja_JP.UTF-8
2, Launch Font2DTest in DEMO.
3, Select font among Serif or ,SansSerif,MonoSpaced,Dialog,DialogInput.
4, Select Hiragana or Katakana from Range.

It was also reproducible with jdk1.3.1 rc1 b17 on IA8 ja_JP UTF-8

It's not reproducible with jdk1.3.1 rc1 b17 in exactly the same way described above on IA8 ja_JP UTF-8. Japanese appeared. Since the message above appeared, however, I'll separate this issue.

This bug is not related optional fonts.
It is the premise that ISO-8859-4 ISO-8859-9 is installed.
Evaluate again please.

Then, This bug is still reproducible with 1.4.0-beta-b53.
and is not seen with ladybird.

This behavior occured on sparc and x86 Solaris8,
and is not seen on sparc and x86 Solaris7.
