The J2RE contains a large number of character converters that are not needed for the platforms that we provide J2REs for and are also not commonly used on the Internet. J2SE 1.4 provides a character converter SPI that allows anybody to plug in third-party character converters as needed. These non-platform character converters therefore can be removed from the J2RE and offered as separate products, either by Sun or by the companies defining the character encodings. Removing the character converters described in the Suggested Fix would reduce the size of the J2RE by 1.3 MB. Note that this would result in a reduction of the download size by about the same amount, since character converters are already well compressed.
