I have traced this problem back to:

java version "1.4.0beta"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.0beta-b35)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4beta-B35, mixed mode)

This seems to be only happening on Solaris.

Run SwingSet2 applet:

% appletviewer SwingSet2.html

In the "demo/jfc/SwingSet2" directory and you'll get the following error messages and the demos not loading:

Error occurred loading demo: ListDemo
Error occurred loading demo: TabbedPaneDemo
