Applets are much slower loading in the JRE 1.4 plugin. The progress bar, which displays class loading information, slows the load time of our applets by 3-4 seconds, even if the classes are already loaded.

You will see this progress bar when you load any applet using the 1.4
plugin. If you want to see the applets that I based my measurements on, take
