Currently during the uninstall of our jdk/jre, we restore the value of CurrentVersion and the dot.dot keys of the most recent release remaining of the dot.dot family being uninstalled, if any. It would also be a good idea to recopy the java and javaw to the system directory from the bin directory of the release that we are setting currentVersion to. That way, even after uninstallation of a release, typing java on the command line will work for the most recent release on the machine.
It seems to me that if we are going to go through the trouble of recreating the CurrentVersion string, and the dot.dot key we should also copy over the files that actually use it.
