      D:\Java\jdk1.4\bin>java -version
      java version "1.4.0-beta2"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.0-beta2-b77)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.0-beta2-b77, mixed mode)

When I boot Windows 2000 on my multi-boot system, my system
drive is D:\. When I run the Windows JDK 1.4beta2 installer,
I can specify that the installation take place on the D:drive. If I request the option to also install the
corresponding JRE, I do not have the opportunity to specify
the location of the install, and the install takes place to
the C:\ drive. No uninstall for JRE 1.4beta2 shows in the
      Add/Remove Programs control program.
