I have installed Netscape 6.2, then Java Plug-in 1.3.1_01. Now when I
open web pages containing Java applets Netscape hangs. I can prevent
the hangs by disabling Java in Preferences.

I have tried uninstalling all versions of JRE, then reinstalling the
above. In the Plug-In Control Panel I have tried clearing the JAR cache
and disabling the Just In Time Compiler. All of this was to no avail.

My OS is Windows NT 4.00.1381.

Netscape also hangs if I attempt to start the Java Console.

I have experienced hangs when I attempted to open any of the following
web pages. (The last two pages were found in links from
http://java.sun.com/applets)
http://www.progress.org/
http://www.ascensionware.com/resources/color/
http://www.geocities.com/hanyong23/

By hang I mean Netscape stops responding to input or a shutdown command,
and Netscape consumes no CPU time.
