JDK-2049838 | 1.4.0 | Devananda Jayaraman | P2 | Closed | Fixed | rc1 |
I download the Sun Java virtual machine and am confused. Is this a
plug-in for the browser or a program running on my machine. The
reason that I ask is that I have a 22MB program in my Add/Remove
Programs list for the Java 2 Runtime Environment after installing
the download from your site, but after installing the Java virtual
machine from Microsoft, it is not listed there. I read that it could
not be uninstalled, but the main question stands: Is it a program or
a plug-in? Is it installed as part of the OS or in the browser?
----------------------------------------------------------
Steps to reproduce this problem:
Install a fresh XP machine, which does not have any java VM. Go to java.sun.com and notice that it will prompt you to download the msvm. Cancel. First install our Sun jre and view the applet correctly at java.sun.com. Then go to the plugin control panel and disable our jre with IE. Restart the browser, go to java.sun.com and notice that it prompts you to download msvm. Download msvm and make sure the applet view correctly with the msvm. Then uninstall the sun jre. Restart the browser, go to java.sun.com and it will prompt you to download the msvm again. It should not prompt you to download the msvm because it has already been installed once.
