If applications are downloaded with webstart on win32 these applications should be somehow or somewhere registered (for example on windows in the win32 registry). This would allow a tracking of these applications (for example with windows system management tools) and applications could access the registry (for example with the Merlin Preferences API) to know what other apps are installed.
