FULL PRODUCT VERSION :
Trying to install j2re-1_4_0-win.exe
FULL OPERATING SYSTEM VERSION : Windows 2000 5.00.2195
service Pack 2
A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
Trying to install j2re-1_4_0-win.exe
I get the error message: "An Installation support file
could not be installed. The filename, directory or volume
label syntax is incorrect" This happens while the
InstallShield Wizard dialog box is about 20% finished in
its task: "Java Runtime Environment Setup is preparing the
InstallShield Wizard, which will will guide you through
the rest of the installation process. Please Wait.
Additional Notes:
1) This is not the 'cannot run 16-bit programs' problem. I
can run 16 bit programs and have NTVDM.EXE installed in my
WINNT\system32 directory.
2) I AM logged in as an Administrator.
3) Another curious fact is if I use Winzip to extract the
files from the executable I get a disk1 folder. Inside
this is a file named data1.cab . If I try to use Winzip
8.1 to open this cab file I get the error message "Winzip
cannot open C:\Java\Disk1\data1.cab because it is not in
the standard Microsoft CAB format (as defined in mid-
1998). The 'Signature bytes' required by the Microsoft CAB
specification are missing"
4) The same error occurs trying to install the j2sdk-1_4_0-
forte-ce-3_0-bin-win.exe
5) The j2re-1_3_1_02-win.exe installs with no problems as
does the corresponding sdk.
REGRESSION. Last worked in version 1.3.1
STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
1.download j2re1_4_0_win.exe (9,373,896 byes)
2. double click on this file OR
run it from a command promt Dos emulator box
3.
ERROR MESSAGES/STACK TRACES THAT OCCUR :
An Installation support file could not be installed. The filename, directory
or volume label syntax is incorrect"
This bug can be reproduced always.
CUSTOMER WORKAROUND :
None found.
I have tried using a root level directory with a short
name. I have tried renaming my volumes to be the default
(Local Disk) . I have tried downloading the latest version
of Winzip (8.1).
I had a copy of Installshield installed on my system and I
tried uninstalling that.
I also tried unistalling previous version of the J2RE
before I tried the install.
I tried logged in as Administrator.
