FULL PRODUCT VERSION :

FULL OPERATING SYSTEM VERSION : Suse Linux 7.2
ADDITIONAL OPERATING SYSTEMS :Windows 98, NT, 2000
A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
Java 2 applications cannot display true type fonts properly.
Instead of single spaced lines of text the lines are look
almost 1.5 to double spaced.
STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
Take a look at an Java 2 client implementation: Forte,
Netbeans, Jedit
EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
Single spacing between lines would be great.
That or add a feature to the Swing apis to control the
spacing between lines of text
This bug can be reproduced always.
CUSTOMER WORKAROUND :
There really isn't any and it detracts from the image of
Java as it is a highly visible issue.
This is true in particular for linux platforms where the
native fonts are so poor that people often install true type
fonts.
This extra spacing problem is very visible and helps spoil
the look of flagship client apps like forte and jedit. It
is particularly bad in these applications as they are for
creating code and 1.5->double spacing is horrible for
editing text.
