Platform: Windows 32-bit
Build : J2SE 1.4.2 Mantis b-03
Bundle: J2sdk.exe, j2re.exe full bundles
Location : /java/re/jdk/1.4.2/latest/bundles/windows-i586
Test Case: Clean Install of mantis SDK / JRE
Re-produced in: Win 2000 Pro SP2, Win 98 SE
Steps to reproduce:
1. Download mantis b03 SDK & JRE bundles on to the local machine.
2. disconnect network cable (or disable proxy for on SWAN machines)
3. execute j2sdk.exe or j2re.exe. Installer will show the splash screen. Then it gives a message
" An error occured while downloading the file http://www.installengine.com/Msiengine20/instmsiw.exe. what would you like to do? "
The installer is unable to proceed without network connection and hence SDK and JRE installation fails.
This is because, the new IS7 installer needs Windows Installer 2.0 installed in the local machine to proceed. if it is not found, then it downloads it from the internet.
This problem is not found in Windows XP Home/Pro and in machines which already have windows installer 2.0 installed.
Users with Win 9x/ME/NT/2000 can be affected by this problem.
You can see which version of Windows Installer is installed by doing the following:
a. Locate the file MSI.DLL. (Usually located in C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 )
b. Select the file, and right-click on it
c. Choose properties, and switch to the version tab.
This requirement should be properly documented in the download pages and in installation notes.
If possible, we should either host the windows installer 2.0 in our website or provide a link to it.
