JDK-2062455 | 5.0 | William Harnois | P2 | Closed | Fixed | tiger |
Platform: Windows 32-bit
Build : J2SE 1.4.2 Mantis b-10
Bundle: j2re.exe (full & web bundles)
Location : /java/re/jdk/1.4.2/promoted/beta/b10/bundles/windows-i586
Win32: Mantis setup always installs to directory with name j2sdk1.4.2/j2re1.4.2
After bug #4755327 was fixed, we install mantis into "install directory +
j2sdk1.4.2/j2re1.4.2" depending on the bundle.
Hence the text in the custom install screen for specifying the custom install directory is "Install to c:\". This is confusing to end users.
On seeing this, users will think that it is going to install SDK to c:\ and might change install directory to c:\j2sdk1.4.2.
But finally the product will get installed into 'c:\j2sdk1.4.2\j2sdk1.4.2' which is not what end users would expect.
Also if some users/ISV's want to install the product in a custom directory with the name say 'jdk', they wont be able to do that. It will always install to directories with name j2sdk1.4.2/j2re1.4.2. This is a REGRESSION bug.
So please provide a solution so that this problem could be avoided.
This problem is also found in JRE installer.

Same complains got from at least 2 CAP members:
-------------------------------------------------
I think the new installer is somewhat inconvenient
since it doesn't allow me to designate the directory
to install J2SDK in. I usually install JDK at c:/j2sdk1.4,
unless a major release such as J2SE 1.5 and so on.
