Name: gm110360 Date: 01/13/2003
FULL PRODUCT VERSION :
java version "1.4.1_01"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_01-b01)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.1_01-b01, mixed mode)
FULL OPERATING SYSTEM VERSION :
Microsoft Windows 2000 [Version 5.00.2195]
ADDITIONAL OPERATING SYSTEMS :
Microsoft Windows XP [version 5.1.2600]
A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
In French locale (maybe others), the pop-up menu for the
Java plug-in (displayed on right-clicking the taskbar icon,
next to the clock, visible when the browser views a page
containing an applet), contains incorrectly-encoded
characters for letters with accents.
Looks like a stream of UTF-8 bytes sent to create a menu,
where the menu interprets that as ASCII...
STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
1. Using a web browser, for which the Java plug-in is
enabled as the standard applet viewer, go to any page
containing a Java applet.
2. The "coffee cup" icon appears in the Windows taskbar,
right-click it to display the context menu.
3. The context menu appears, with incorrectly-encoded
labels for menu items.
EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
Expected: readable text.
Actual: unreadable text (unless you speak UTF-8
fluently...!)
REPRODUCIBILITY :
This bug can be reproduced always.
