This is a regression in behaviour bug.

Run the Java2 SDK Font2DTest demo in any J2SE version 1.4.0 or later. Compare this UI to that of the Font2DTest demo running in version 1.3.1, for example. You will notice that the UI of the newer 1.4+ versions is missing an extremely useful feature whereby the fonts displaying in the 1.3.1 "Font:" list box have asterisks next to them if they support display of glphs selected in the "Unicode Base text field".

This ability to associate glyphs with specific font support is very valuable in debugging font display problems. This functionality should be added back to Font2DTest.
