Currently, Java Sound supports DirectSound for low latency. However, Directound has some serious disadvantages like inability to query the number of physical channels, or bit depths.

ASIO is a professional driver model which would give Java Sound programs a level of control over the soudcard currently only yet reached on Linux with the ALSA support.
