I attached two screenshots about the Javahelp User Guide rendered in the Javahelp demo help viewer. I see the same problem with the Sun Java Desktop System online help (JDSHelp) that is built using Javahelp.

It is quite visible that the toolbar looks better with 1.4.2. Also the 1.4.2 look is closer to the metal look&feel on both 1.4.2 and 1.5 (as far as space between the icons is concerned).
