A DESCRIPTION OF THE REQUEST :
Java 1.5 beta 1 had new Scanner objects produced using create() methods and did not provide constructors in the Scanner API. In Java 1.5 beta 2 Scanner provides only constructors and no create() methods. I IMPLORE you to strongly consider also having the create() methods as convenience methods for the class.



JUSTIFICATION :
I am sure that a great deal of code -- including my own -- has already been written to use the create() methods.

Furthermore, several introductory programming Java 1.5 text books have been written assuming the existence of the create() methods. For example, several thousand students will be using my text book "Java Program Design 1.5" (McGraw-Hill) this fall. Although I am personally affected, the problem will affect most introductory programming books. Introductory programming text book authors needed to commit their text copy months ago in order to allow Java 1.5 books to be available for fall. Think of all the new programmers being confronted by instructors saying for these many texts to ignore that Scanner statement as written and instead write it in the following manner ...
