A DESCRIPTION OF THE REQUEST :
Our company hosts a kids portal called Kiddonet.com (one of the biggest Internet sites for pre-teens in the US). We have Java content on our site and encourage our users to download and install the Java plug-in 1.4+. However, the installation process seems to be too complicated for our users (young kids, usually under 13:-).
We refer them to the following link: http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp . The installation process consists of numerous dialogs, including a "License agreement" which certainly looks "scary" to the kids. We even provide them with "Step-by-step" instructions (http://www.kiddonet.com/premium/tools/java/instructions.html) but this does not help much... We're getting a lot of complaints.
It would be great to have a "one-click" installation (just like many commonly used plug-ins, such as Macromedia Flash etc.)
JUSTIFICATION :
As a big kids portal, we are forced to remove Java content from our site, because the number of unsatisfied users grows as new computers come with WinXP. As you know, WinXP comes without Java, and users have to download and install the Java Plug-in. Some of them find this process extremely complicated, to others the installation freezes the computer, etc.
This may become a bad trend - the more users buy new computers, the more Internet sites will be forced to remove Java content/replace it with Flash etc.
EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
EXPECTED -
A "one-click" installation (just like many commonly used plug-ins, such as Macromedia Flash etc.)
