Solaris 10 builds 71 and 72 (and possibly earlier) include JDK 1.4.2_06 b02. This was an internal development build that includes a known bug (#5108664) that was fixed in the final b03.
#5108664 prevents users from installing NetBeans 4.0 on Solaris 10 using the default JDK. Workaround exists, but the initial user experience is very bad.
I'm not familiar with the process of bundling various libraries and components with Solaris, but including a development version of a component doesn't seem to be a good idea in general. Hopefully, this issue will get fixed in the upcoming Solaris 10 builds.
1.4.2_06 b3 (our fcs build) was delivered into Solaris B74. Please try Solaris B74 to see if the problem is verified as fixed.

Verified in b74. The build includes JDK 1.4.2_06-b03 as well as 5.0_u1-b08. NetBeans installer works fine with these JDKs.
