Configure makefiles to allow for different compilers to be used Defs-gnu-gcc2, Defs-sun-cc ...

We need to try and make it easier to build with different compilers.

Don't want to suggest any implementation, but if I wanted to build it
on Windows with gcc, or Solaris with gcc, or Windows with any possible
free compiler. We don't need to qualify it, just allow this to happen
as easily as possible.
