Let me just do a quick summary of StarOffice/OpenOffice.orgs Java relation:
- we are using Java in-process (for performance reasons)
- we are dependent to particular Java versions (the ones for StarOffice are the ones we QA, in history it happened that we needed to disable support for a Java micro because of bugs, for OpenOffice.org it just 1.3.1 and above)
- we need to support multiple Java vendors (at least for OpenOffice.org, which supports platforms for which no Sun Javas are available)
- we are multiple platform, including Solaris (SPARC/x86), Windows in various flavors and Linux
- we have our own executable and can not leverage Java through java.exe or anything
