Microsoft has submitted registrations for 5 new charsets to IANA. The registrations cover Windows code pages that have been supported in the JRE under different names:
x-windows-874 -> windows-874
windows-31j -> windows-932
x-mswin-936 -> windows-936
x-windows-949 -> windows-949
x-windows-950 -> windows-950
According to the java.nio.charset.Charset specification, approval of this registration (which hasn't happened yet) means that the canonical names for these charsets need to be updated to use the new names. Old names should be retained as aliases for compatibility. Note that this also requires updates outside the java.nio system, e.g., to fontconfig files.
Microsoft has also updated the registrations for 9 other Windows code pages. It needs to be verified that the JRE character converters are up-to-date with the latest specifications.
