      FULL PRODUCT VERSION :
      Java 1.4.2_07 (JRE only)

      ADDITIONAL OS VERSION INFORMATION :
      Microsoft Windows 2000 [Version 5.00.2195]

      EXTRA RELEVANT SYSTEM CONFIGURATION :
      Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1

A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
While testing applets with different plugin versions, I uninstalled the Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2_07. Afterwards, going to an applet page, I received an "Install On Demand" prompt:

To display this page correctly, you need to download and install the following components:
      Java Virtual Machine

This is the second time this has happened with a 1.4.2 plugin (see http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=30&threadID=548143). I have installed/uninstalled Java 1.3.1_15 and Java 1.4.1_07 plugins without this problem.

STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
Install Java Plugin 1.4.2_07 on Windows 2000 SP4 with Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1.
(My download file was j2re-1_4_2_07-windows-i586-p.jar. I had to append a ".exe" to the filename after downloading to get it to install--another glitch.)
Use the IE browser to visit an applet web page that will work with the 1.4.2_07 plugin.
      Close the browser.
Uninstall the the Java Plugin through Settings->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs.
Restart IE and go to any web page with an applet.

      EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
      EXPECTED -
I was expecting to be able to run 1.0/1.1 applets with the default MSJVM in Internet Explorer.
      ACTUAL -
Got the "Install On Demand" prompt (see the Description section).

ERROR MESSAGES/STACK TRACES THAT OCCUR :
To display this page correctly, you need to download and install the following components:
      Java Virtual Machine

      REPRODUCIBILITY :
This bug can be reproduced always.
