Right click on an applet to show a menu displaying an item saying:
"About Java Technology" or "About Java Runtime Environment 5.0". This is similar to what Macromedia has for flash.
The "About Java Technology" dialog box can be opened by right click on the Java icon in the system tray. The same dialog box should be available if user right clicks on an applet.
