The attach API in mustang allows tools to attach and start the JMX agent in the target VM. However there isn't a supported way to obtain the connector address once the agent is running. jconsole reads the address from the instrumentation buffer via a sun.* API but this is not suitable for direct use by applications. The issue has come up on JMX-FORUM a number of times. Also NetBeans and a few of the tools vendors have asked about this functionality.
