windows_98
FULL PRODUCT VERSION :
java version "1.5.0_04"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_04-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_04-b05, mixed mode)
ADDITIONAL OS VERSION INFORMATION :
windows 98se (traditional chinese version)
A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
After installing microsoft's support for HKSCS for Windows 98 (Traditional Chinese version) (available from www.microsoft.com/hk/hkscs/default.aspx, file hkscswme.exe, size 6,238,432 bytes), text characters in java plugin dialogue boxes (including the control panel, jpicpl32.cpl, and the prompt for client certificates) all became little hollow squares. Uninstalling hkscswme.exe and things are back to normal. If I get hkscsb5c.exe from http://www.info.gov.hk/digital21/chi/hkscs/download/hkscsb5c.exe and install that instead of hkscswme.exe, the problem does not occur, but then IE is unable to display some HKSCS characters and posting form data (thru our jsp-based webapp) including such characters causes IE to change the encoding to something unpredictable (for one our clients running windows xp traditional chinese ver, IE used GBK, for others I was unable to find out, but I suspect it is UTF-8). This means we need microsoft's hkscswme.exe to make our webapp work, but then it gives us this problem I am reporting here.
STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
1. on a windows 98se traditional chinese platform, install hkscswme.exe from www.microsoft.com/hk/hkscs/default.aspx
2. invoke the java control panel and look at the interface
EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
EXPECTED -
the normal looking interface (including chinese text)
ACTUAL -
english chars are ok, but the chinese chars all turnt into hollow squares
REPRODUCIBILITY :
This bug can be reproduced always.
