Builds on Solaris X86 give:
expr: syntax error.
Turns out COMPILER_REV use should have been CC_VER in Makefiles.
Apparently this was introduced with 6359699, so it's possible the impact of
6359699 on the performance will really happen when this fix comes in, it's
hard to tell what the makefile rules do when expr fails.
