The Javadoc for factory classes should indicate if their instances are thread safe. Judging by the RI, many factories are indeed thread safe, but this is not clearly stated for DatatypeFactory (and maybe others, but didn't check all). Given that we encourage programmers to minimize the number of factory instances for performance reason, thread safety should be clearly specified.
