Java Update to 5.0u11 on win98 stalls/hangs
System: x86-win98
Browser: IE5.5
I tried this on 3 win98 systems with memory ranging from 128-256Mb. The memory is sufficient given the operating-system. Uodates on other window operating systems have been successful i.e. x86-winxphome-ie60 and x86-win2003se-ie60.
How to reproduce:
1. Remove all jre/jdks from win98 system. Remove Google Toolbar also if it is installed.
2. Install jre 1.4.2_13 fcs.
3. Set the following registry key:
"HKLM/Software/JavaSoft/Java Update/Policy/UpdateServletURL" => "http://webwork.sfbay.sun.com:8081/update/1.4.2/map-1.4.2.xml"
4. Run Java Control Panel -> Click Update and then click "Update Now".
You should (after a few seconds) be informed of 5.0u11 availability. Proceed to install the new update. You should be offered Google Toolbar only as well.
Install should proceed to at least half-way but then stall/hang. Please see attached picture (.bmp format).
If you check Add/Remove Programs you can see the new update appears to have been installed, how trust worthy it is would be uncertain.
