ADDITIONAL OS VERSION INFORMATION :
Windows XP Pro SP2
EXTRA RELEVANT SYSTEM CONFIGURATION :
System has Netbeans 5.5 and Apache Tomcat 5.5.20
A DESCRIPTION OF THE PROBLEM :
During the installation of the JRE 6 Update 1, I get the dialogue box reporting :-
Error 1406. Could not write value INSTALLDIR to key \Software\Java Runtime Environment\1.6.0_01\MSI. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
[Abort] [Retry] [Ignore]
I opt for the custom install and choose the folder R:\Java\jre1.6.0_01\. There is over 11GB of disk space on R and over 3GB on the system drive (C).
I have tried with both the online update and the downloaded jre-6u1-windows-i586-p.exe file and both report the same problem.
I am logged as an administrative user and should have full rights to the registry.
STEPS TO FOLLOW TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM :
Run the JRE 6 Update installation exe on a WIndows XP Pro SP2 PC and choose custom setup and select a different installation drive.
EXPECTED VERSUS ACTUAL BEHAVIOR :
EXPECTED -
The update would install without any error dialogues.
ACTUAL -
Error 1406. Could not write value INSTALLDIR to key \Software\Java Runtime Environment\1.6.0_01\MSI. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.
